Prayer for Civility
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where uncivil words prevail, show me how to model love.
Help me remember the God-given dignity of all and invite others to do the same.
Show me how to build bridges and not walls and see first what unites us rather
than how we diverge.
Let me seek to understand before asking to be understood.
Give me a listening heart filled with empathy and compassion.
May I be clear in sharing my own position and respectful and civil in describing
those of others.
Let me never tolerate hateful ideas. My I invite all to charity and love.
Lord, help me to imitate your compassion and mercy. Make me an instrument of your peace.
Amen.
Who Are Secular Franciscans:
Lay People: They are ordinary Catholics—working, raising families, holding jobs—who feel called to live a deeper Franciscan life.
Married & Single: The Order is open to both men and women, married or single, living at home.
Part of the Third Order: They belong to the Third Order of St. Francis, the lay branch established by Francis himself.
What They Do:
Live the Gospel: They strive to live like Christ by following St. Francis' example, finding practical ways to live the Gospel in their everyday lives.
Form Fraternities: They meet regularly (usually monthly) in local "fraternities" for spiritual nourishment, shared prayer, and community.
Serve the World: They engage in apostolic works, focusing on social justice, care for the poor, environmental stewardship, and supporting the Church.
Commit for Life: After a period of inquiry and formation, they make a lifelong promise (profession) to live according to the OFS Rule.
Key Distinction:
Unlike Franciscan friars (First Order) or sisters (Second Order) who live in community and take vows, Secular Franciscans remain in their own homes and secular lives, integrating their faith into the world.
